Colombo

Colombo is Sri Lanka's commercial capital, a city of roughly 650,000 people spread along the Indian Ocean coast

Colombo is Sri Lanka's commercial capital, a city of roughly 650,000 people spread along the Indian Ocean coast. Dutch and British colonial buildings sit next to glass towers and half-finished port-city reclamation projects. Most visitors use it as a one-to-two day entry or exit point before heading to Kandy, Galle, or the hill country. The food is the strongest reason to linger: Sri Lankan curry, hoppers, and street snacks here rival anything you'll find elsewhere in South Asia.

Where to Start

Base yourself near Galle Face Green or Fort, the two areas that bookend the city's colonial and modern faces. Walk Galle Face at dusk when locals fly kites and eat street food along the seafront, then head into Fort for dinner.

When to Visit in Colombo

The best time to visit Colombo is December to March. This is Colombo's dry season on the west coast, with daytime highs around 30-31°C and fewer downpours, making it workable for walking Fort and Galle Face without getting soaked.

Avoid: The wettest months are May to June and October to November, with 25 to 30 wet days a month (Open-Meteo averages, 2015 to 2024).

Getting Around

How to get around Colombo

  • PickMe or Uber: cheaper and more reliable than street-hailed tuk-tuks
  • Public buses: approximately 10-20p per ride, crowded and slow but covers the whole city
  • Walking: Fort, Galle Face, and Pettah are walkable to each other (under 2km), but pavements are inconsistent and midday heat is heavy
  • Trains: Colombo Fort station connects to coastal towns like Mount Lavinia and Galle
Bandaranaike International Airport (32 km by road, about 0.5 hours' drive)

Food and Drink in Colombo

  • Kottu roti - Chopped roti stir-fried with vegetables, egg, and meat on a hot griddle, served with curry sauce Find it at: Pilawoos, Galle Road.
  • Hoppers (appa) - Bowl-shaped fermented rice-flour pancakes, often served with an egg cracked into the centre Find it at: Upali's by Nawaloka, Kollupitiya.
  • Isso wade - Deep-fried lentil fritters topped with whole prawns, sold from carts along the seafront Find it at: Galle Face Green food carts.
  • Rice and curry - A set meal of rice with 4-6 small curries, typically including dhal, fish or chicken, and vegetables Find it at: Ministry of Crab (upscale) or local 'hotel' canteens (budget).
  • Lamprais - Dutch Burgher-style rice, meat, and sambol baked together in a banana leaf parcel Find it at: Hotel de Pilawoos or Paradise Road Cafe.
  • Crab curry - Sri Lankan mud crab in a spiced coconut curry, a Colombo specialty Find it at: Ministry of Crab, Dutch Hospital Precinct.

Common Mistakes to Avoid in Colombo

  • Spending 4+ days in Colombo instead of moving on to Kandy, Galle, or Ella, which reward longer stays
  • Walking long distances at midday in 32°C heat and high humidity instead of using cheap tuk-tuks or PickMe
  • Not negotiating tuk-tuk fares upfront or refusing to use the meter, leading to overcharging
  • Assuming Colombo has good swimming beaches; the city beaches are polluted and better suited to walks than swimming
  • Skipping Pettah Market because it looks chaotic, missing one of the best unfiltered views of daily commerce in the city
  • Drinking tap water without checking; stick to bottled or filtered water throughout the stay

Understanding the Layout

Colombo runs roughly north to south along the coast. Pettah and Fort sit at the northern, historic end near the harbour and train station. Galle Face Green separates Fort from the slightly more residential Kollupitiya and Bambalapitiya further south. Cinnamon Gardens sits inland, quieter and leafier, home to museums and embassies. Mount Lavinia, a beach suburb, is a short train ride further south again.

What Most Guides Get Wrong

Many guides oversell Colombo as a destination worth three or four days when one to two is usually enough for most travellers. The city lacks the beaches, ruins, or hill scenery that make the rest of Sri Lanka worth the trip, and its traffic and heat wear people down fast. Treat it as a gateway and food stop, not a highlight in itself.
