Where to go

Colombo National Museum

Sri Lanka's largest museum, housed in a white colonial-era building from 1877, holding the royal regalia of the last Kandyan kings alongside ancient stone carvings, ola-leaf manuscripts, and colonial-era furniture. It's dense and under-curated in places but the only spot in Colombo covering the island's full history in one visit.

Time needed 1.5-2.5 hours. Best time: Weekday mornings, least crowded.
Tip
The second floor's ancient stone sculpture gallery is usually empty even when the ground floor is crowded with school groups.
Skip it if travellers with limited time wanting only a quick city overview, the museum needs real time to be worthwhile.

Opening hours and how to get there are on the Colombo National Museum page.

Dutch Period Museum

Housed in a restored 17th-century mansion once used as the Dutch governor's residence, this museum displays colonial-era furniture, ceramics, maps, and Dutch East India Company documents. The building itself, with its courtyard and thick coral-stone walls, is arguably more interesting than the exhibits, which are modest and sparsely labeled.

Time needed 45-60 minutes. Best time: Weekday mornings, when Pettah's surrounding streets are less crowded.
Tip
Ask the staff about the building's past as a hospital and orphanage before becoming the governor's residence; it's not well signposted but adds context the displays don't cover.
Skip it if visitors wanting polished, well-curated museum exhibits rather than a building of historic interest with light labeling.
