Interior access is restricted, so this is a five-minute photo stop rather than a destination in itself. It is at Colombo's Fort, close to the other main sights. It ranks among Colombo's most visited sights, and for good reason - most itineraries include it on day one.
What It Is
You stand on a busy pavement looking up at a white cast-iron tower hemmed in by traffic and colonial facades, a reminder that the shoreline here used to sit much closer.
Why Visit
It's a two-minute marker of how far Colombo's coastline has shifted since the 1850s, slotted between two other colonial buildings worth seeing anyway. That puts it near the top of any Colombo visit, and it deserves the spot. Combine it with Galle Face Green and Seema Malaka Temple - they are close enough to walk between and together make the strongest half-day in Colombo. Afternoon tends to work best here.
