Unlike Anuradhapura, which sprawls over a much larger area, Polonnaruwa's compact layout suits travellers with limited time. Polonnaruwa in one day vs two days

One day Gal Vihara, Vatadage (Quadrangle), Rankoth Vehera, Royal Palace of Parakramabahu. Start at whichever opens earliest and work outward; the central cluster is walkable in 25 minutes.
Two days day one as above, then add Polonnaruwa Archaeological Museum, Parakrama Samudra, Dimbulagala Rock Monastery, Giritale Wewa and Nature Reserve. Day two is when you trade the headline tickets for the streets and side courts that come with them.
Three days the additions are Lankatilaka And Tivanka Image House, plus a half-day spent without an itinerary. The pace should drop to one anchor stop in the morning and a meal-led afternoon.
