A small museum roughly a 10-minute walk from the Quadrangle, with scale models of the original Polonnaruwa structures as they would have looked, plus excavated bronze statues, pottery, and jewellery. Visiting first gives useful context before wandering the ruins themselves, since several buildings are otherwise hard to picture at full height. Exhibits are organized by structure, matching the layout of the site outside. It sits below the headline sights but earns its place on a longer visit to Polonnaruwa, especially paired with nearby Royal Palace of Parakramabahu.
What It Is
You move through a sequence of cool, air-conditioned rooms with glass cases of bronze and stone artefacts, pausing at large scale models that reconstruct buildings now reduced to ruins outside.
Why Visit
The scale models solve the biggest problem at Polonnaruwa: figuring out what the ruins actually looked like when intact. It is not the first thing you should see in Polonnaruwa, but with two or more days it fills a gap the major sights leave. It pairs naturally with Royal Palace of Parakramabahu and Rankoth Vehera - together they fill a solid half-day. Mornings are quieter if you want to take your time.
