Royal Palace of Parakramabahu

Is Royal Palace of Parakramabahu worth visiting? Honest verdict inside.

The ruined seven-storey royal residence of King Parakramabahu I, built in the 12th century, now reduced to thick brick walls up to three storeys high. Historical accounts describe the original building with 1,000 rooms; what remains gives a sense of the footprint and construction technique rather than the full grandeur. The adjacent Council Chamber has better-preserved carved stone pillars. It is at Polonnaruwa New Town, close to the other main sights. At 30-40 minutes, it works well slotted between larger visits rather than as a standalone destination.

What It Is

You walk through gaps in thick brick walls that once supported multiple floors, with open sky overhead where wooden upper storeys and a roof used to stand.

Why Visit

It's the clearest physical evidence of Polonnaruwa's role as a royal capital rather than just a religious centre. It is not the first thing you should see in Polonnaruwa, but with two or more days it fills a gap the major sights leave. It pairs naturally with Rankoth Vehera and Gal Vihara - add it before or after without rearranging your day. Mornings are quieter if you want to take your time.
