Rumassala Hill is a jungle-covered headland at the eastern end of Unawatuna Bay, topped by a Japanese Peace Pagoda with panoramic ocean views. The hill is steeped in Ramayana mythology and is home to unusual medicinal plants not found elsewhere in southern Sri Lanka. The walk up through the jungle to the gleaming white pagoda is a rewarding half-afternoon activity.
What It Is
A forested headland rising above Unawatuna Bay, with a Japanese Peace Pagoda (one of several in Sri Lanka built by the Japanese Nipponzan Myohoji order) at the summit. The jungle is unusually biodiverse for southern Sri Lanka, supporting rare medicinal plants.
Why Visit
The Peace Pagoda is a serene, beautiful spot with panoramic views over the ocean and coastline. The walk through the jungle is pleasant, and the Ramayana legend adds a layer of cultural interest.
