Pidurangala Royal Cave Temple

Is Pidurangala Royal Cave Temple worth visiting? Honest verdict inside.

A working Buddhist temple built into a rock overhang at the base of Pidurangala, predating the fortress period of Sigiriya Rock across the plain. Inside, a 12-meter reclining Buddha statue carved from brick and plaster sits beneath the natural stone ceiling, with monks still resident on site. At 20-30 minutes, it works well slotted between larger visits rather than as a standalone destination.

What It Is

A dim, cool cave space with the long reclining Buddha figure, incense smoke, and the sound of the forest outside the open rock overhang.

Why Visit

It's a genuine working monastery, not a roped-off ruin, giving a quieter contrast to the tourist volume at Sigiriya Rock itself. It is not the first thing you should see in Sigiriya, but with two or more days it fills a gap the major sights leave. It pairs naturally with Pidurangala Rock and Sigiriya Rock (Lion Rock) - add it before or after without rearranging your day. Mornings are quieter if you want to take your time.
