Pidurangala Rock

Is Pidurangala Rock worth visiting? Honest verdict inside.

A rock outcrop facing Sigiriya directly, home to a cave temple and a steeper, rougher climb than its famous neighbor. Most travellers come here specifically for sunrise, since the summit gives an unobstructed view of Sigiriya Rock catching the first light, something you can't photograph from Sigiriya itself. It ranks among Sigiriya's most visited sights, and for good reason - most itineraries include it on day one.

What It Is

You climb a dirt trail through forest, past a reclining Buddha statue in a cave shrine, then scramble over loose boulders to a flat rock summit with a direct view across to Sigiriya Rock, often with a reflective mist still in the valley below.

Why Visit

This is the actual best photo of Sigiriya Rock, and the climb is rawer and less commercial than the main attraction. That puts it near the top of any Sigiriya visit, and it deserves the spot. Combine it with Sigiriya Rock (Lion Rock) - they are close enough to walk between and together make the strongest half-day in Sigiriya. Afternoon tends to work best here.
