Viharamahadevi Park

Viharamahadevi Park: Free, 45-90 minutes. Worth it?

Families use it for evening walks and weekend picnics, and it hosts the city's biggest Vesak lantern displays each May. It sits directly opposite the National Museum, making it an easy add-on rather than a special trip. It is at Colombo's Cinnamon Gardens, close to the other main sights. It ranks among Colombo's most visited sights, and for good reason - most itineraries include it on day one.

What It Is

You walk under rain trees past joggers and street vendors selling roasted peanuts, with the bronze Buddha statue and fountain forming a quiet centre point away from the surrounding traffic.

Why Visit

It's the city's main green space and the easiest place to see Colombo families at leisure rather than in transit, with the added bonus of being free. That puts it near the top of any Colombo visit, and it deserves the spot. Combine it with Independence Memorial Hall and Dutch Period Museum - they are close enough to walk between and together make the strongest half-day in Colombo. Mornings are quieter if you want to take your time.
