A limestone Buddha statue from the 4th century CE, seated in deep meditation, sits within Mahamevnawa Park a short walk from Jaya Sri Maha Bodhi. It is at Anuradhapura's Sacred City (Archaeological Reserve), close to the other main sights. It ranks among Anuradhapura's most visited sights, and for good reason - most itineraries include it on day one.
What It Is
You stand at a low railing facing a weathered grey stone Buddha seated cross-legged beneath a simple protective roof. Shaded park paths and scattered brick fragments surround the small clearing.
Why Visit
It's one of the most technically refined stone carvings surviving from ancient Sri Lanka, compact enough to appreciate in a short stop. That puts it near the top of any Anuradhapura visit, and it deserves the spot. Combine it with Jaya Sri Maha Bodhi (Sacred Bodhi Tree) and Ruwanwelisaya Stupa - they are close enough to walk between and together make the strongest half-day in Anuradhapura. Mornings are quieter if you want to take your time.
