Quiet and unhurried outside festival days, with sand-covered courtyards, orange-robed monks, and white dagobas visible through gaps in the forest. There's no touting at the gates and few vendors inside the core zone, which keeps the atmosphere closer to a functioning religious site than a tourist park.
