This sprawling monastic complex once sheltered 5,000 monks and a monastery tradition influential enough to shape Buddhist practise in China and Java. Unlike the busier central sites, Abhayagiri is spread out enough that you can walk for an hour without crowds. It is at Anuradhapura's Sacred City (Archaeological Reserve), close to the other main sights. It ranks among Anuradhapura's most visited sights, and for good reason - most itineraries include it on day one. Entry is free and 1.5-2 hours gives you a thorough visit.
What It Is
You pedal along shaded dirt and asphalt tracks between brick mounds half-swallowed by forest, stopping at stone platforms carved with lotus and animal motifs. Birdsong replaces traffic noise almost entirely once past the main stupa.
Why Visit
It offers the forested, uncrowded version of ancient Anuradhapura, where ruins emerge gradually from jungle rather than sitting in a cleared plaza. That puts it near the top of any Anuradhapura visit, and it deserves the spot. Combine it with Kuttam Pokuna (Twin Ponds) and Jetavanaramaya - they are close enough to walk between and together make the strongest half-day in Anuradhapura. Mornings are quieter if you want to take your time.
