Historic fort walls overlooking the ocean with waves crashing below

Galle Fort Ramparts

Galle Fort Ramparts: Free, 1-2 hours. Worth it?

The Galle Fort Ramparts are the massive Dutch colonial-era walls that encircle the UNESCO World Heritage-listed Galle Fort. Built in the 17th century and remarkably well preserved, the walls offer a continuous walking route with sweeping views of the Indian Ocean, the fort's interior, and the lighthouse. Walking the ramparts is the quintessential Galle experience.

What It Is

A continuous circuit of massive stone fortification walls, punctuated by named bastions (Flag Rock, Star Bastion, Moon Bastion, and others). The walls are wide enough to walk comfortably and are dotted with old cannons. The full circuit is roughly 1.5 kilometres.

Why Visit

This is the single must-do activity in Galle. The views are spectacular, the history is fascinating, and the late afternoon atmosphere - with locals playing cricket, couples watching the sunset, and fishermen below - is quintessentially Sri Lankan.
