Swami Rock is a dramatic cliff promontory at the eastern end of Fort Frederick in Trincomalee, topped by the colourful Koneswaram Kovil (Hindu temple) dedicated to Lord Shiva. The rock rises about 130 metres above the Indian Ocean, offering breathtaking views. The original temple here was one of the most important Hindu sites in Sri Lanka before its destruction by the Portuguese in the 17th century; the current temple is a reconstruction.
What It Is
A cliff-top Hindu temple rebuilt on the site of the ancient Koneswaram Temple, one of the Pancha Ishwarams (five sacred abodes of Shiva) in Sri Lanka. The colourful gopuram (tower) and ocean backdrop make it one of Sri Lanka's most photogenic religious sites.
Why Visit
The combination of dramatic natural setting, religious significance, and colonial history makes Swami Rock one of Trincomalee's essential sights. The views from the cliff edge are genuinely vertiginous, and the temple itself is vibrant and welcoming.
