Pigeon Island

Pigeon Island: ~$10 USD plus boat, half day. Worth it?

Pigeon Island National Park comprises two small islands about a kilometre off Nilaveli Beach, north of Trincomalee. It is widely considered the best snorkelling destination in Sri Lanka, with vibrant coral reefs, abundant tropical fish, and regular sea turtle sightings. The park is named after the rock pigeons that nest on the larger island.

What It Is

Two small rocky islands surrounded by coral reefs in crystal-clear water. The larger island has a small beach for resting between snorkelling sessions. The reef supports over 100 species of coral and 300+ species of reef fish.

Why Visit

This is the premier snorkelling experience in Sri Lanka. The coral is relatively healthy, the fish are abundant, and sea turtle encounters are common. On a calm, clear day, visibility can exceed 15 metres.
