Somawathiya National Park Safari

The park hosts significant elephant populations, leopards, sloth bears, spotted deer, wild boar, and crocodiles along the Mahaweli River. Bird species include fish eagles, painted storks, and endemic Sri Lankan species. Wildlife sightings vary seasonally, with dry months offering better viewing opportunities around water sources.

Somawathiya offers a more authentic wilderness experience with fewer tourists compared to Yala or Udawalawe. The park features diverse ecosystems from riverine forests to grasslands, and includes the historic Somawathiya Chaitya stupa. Elephant sightings are common, though leopard encounters require patience and luck.

The ancient Buddhist stupa dates back over 2,000 years and is believed to contain relics of Buddha. Located within the national park boundaries, it represents the harmony between conservation and cultural heritage. Pilgrims occasionally visit the site, adding spiritual significance to the wildlife sanctuary.
