Your Itinerary

1

Day 1 - Sunrise Hike, Village Life, and Cave Temples

8 km
5:30

Pidurangala Rock

2 hours

Climb the rocky trail behind Pidurangala Temple in the dark, scrambling over boulders near the top, to watch the sun rise directly over Sigiriya Rock. Quieter and cheaper than the main rock, with arguably the better view.

Tuk-tuk or hotel transfer
10:00

Hiriwadunna Village Boat Ride

2.5 hours

A half-day village tour combining a bullock cart ride through paddy fields, a catamaran paddle across Hiriwadunna tank, and a visit to a village home for a cooking demonstration. Touristy but genuinely run by the village cooperative.

Tuk-tuk from Hiriwadunna
12:30

Lunch at Hela Bojun Hala

1 hour

Pick-and-mix rice and curry from stalls run by local women's cooperatives, served on a lotus leaf. Cheaper and more varied than most tourist restaurants in the area.

Tuk-tuk or taxi
14:00

Dambulla Cave Temple

1.5 hours

Five rock-cut cave temples with over 150 Buddha statues, some dating back to the 1st century BCE, plus painted ceilings added over several centuries.

Tuk-tuk or taxi
17:00

Kandalama Lake Viewpoint

1 hour

A Geoffrey Bawa-designed hotel built into a rock face overlooking Kandalama Lake. Non-guests can visit the lobby cafe for a drink while watching the sunset over the reservoir and surrounding jungle.

Lunch at Hela Bojun Hala, an open-air food court run by local women selling home-style Sri Lankan dishes
Dinner at Guesthouse kitchen or a simple roadside curry shop back in Sigiriya village
2

Day 2 - Lion Rock and Elephant Safari

5 km
7:30

Sigiriya Rock (Lion Rock)

3 hours

The main event: climb past the frescoes, mirror wall, and lion paw staircase to the summit ruins of King Kasyapa's 5th-century palace. Starting by 7.30am avoids both the worst heat and the 10am tour-bus rush.

Tuk-tuk back to accommodation
12:00

Lunch and Rest Time

2.5 hours

A slow lunch and a break back at the guesthouse during the hottest part of the day, before heading out again for the afternoon safari. Most jeeps depart between 2pm and 2.30pm.

Jeep pickup from accommodation
14:30

Minneriya National Park

3 hours

Open-top jeep safari in search of wild elephant herds, largest between July and October during the 'Gathering' at Minneriya, when hundreds converge on the reservoir. Kaudulla is a reliable alternative outside those months.

Lunch at Sigiri Lion's Rest or guesthouse lunch near the main entrance
Dinner at Dinner back at accommodation, most guesthouses include home-cooked rice and curry
