Your Itinerary
Day 1: Museum, Quadrangle and Gal Vihara
Polonnaruwa Archaeological Museum
Start here for scale models of the Royal Palace complex and the Vatadage, which make the ruins easier to read once you're standing among them. Ten-minute walk from the quadrangle.
Vatadage (Quadrangle)
The densest cluster of monuments in the park: Vatadage's concentric stone platforms, the Hatadage relic house, and the Satmahal Prasada's stepped pyramid form, unusual for Sri Lanka.
Gal Vihara
Four 12th-century rock-cut Buddha statues, including a 14m reclining figure, carved from one granite face. Come back in late afternoon light on day two if day one is overcast.
Day 2: Bike tour through the Royal Palace, Lankatilaka and the lake
Royal Palace of Parakramabahu
The brick remains of a 7-storey palace, walls still standing nearly 2 storeys high in places. Early morning keeps it cool for the cycling that follows and avoids the midday glare on the brick.
Lankatilaka And Tivanka Image House
Tivanka has fragments of original fresco paintings, rare survivors from the period.
Parakrama Samudra
A 12th-century reservoir built to irrigate the ancient city, still functioning today. Cycle the bund road for views over the water and watch elephants or buffalo come down to drink near sunset.
