Hindu temple dedicated to Goddess Sita, built at the site where she was supposedly held captive by King Ravana according to the Ramayana epic. The temple features colourful statues depicting scenes from the ancient story and sits in a peaceful forest setting along the banks of Sita Eliya stream. It sits below the headline sights but earns its place on a longer visit to Nuwara Eliya, especially paired with nearby Hakgala Botanical Garden. Tickets cost Free (donations welcome) and 45 minutes to 1 hour is enough to see everything without rushing.
What It Is
The building itself is the attraction. Take time with the architectural detail rather than rushing through - the craftsmanship rewards a slow look. The Sita Eliya location means you can step outside and be at other sights within minutes.
Why Visit
Experience an important site from Hindu mythology while learning about Sri Lankan religious traditions. It is not the first thing you should see in Nuwara Eliya, but with two or more days it fills a gap the major sights leave. It pairs naturally with Hakgala Botanical Garden and Ramboda Falls - together they fill a solid half-day. Mornings are quieter if you want to take your time.
