Buduruwagala Temple is an ancient rock carving site featuring seven Mahayana Buddhist figures cut into a cliff face, dating back to around the 10th century. The centrepiece is a 16-metre standing Buddha, one of the tallest ancient statues in Sri Lanka. Despite its archaeological significance, the site remains relatively quiet and uncrowded.
What It Is
A cliff face carved with seven Buddhist figures arranged in three groups. The towering central Buddha is flanked by bodhisattva figures and attendants. Traces of original plaster and paint are still visible on some figures, hinting at how vibrant the site once looked.
Why Visit
This is one of Sri Lanka's hidden archaeological gems. While most visitors flock to Sigiriya and Polonnaruwa, Buduruwagala offers a similarly impressive ancient experience with a fraction of the crowds. The jungle setting adds atmosphere, and the sheer scale of the central Buddha is genuinely impressive.
