A large Portuguese-Catholic church on Negombo's main street, rebuilt in the early 20th century with a painted ceiling depicting biblical scenes across its nave. Negombo is nicknamed 'Little Rome' for its dense concentration of Catholic churches, and St. Mary's is the most prominent. The interior is cooler and quieter than the street outside, a contrast worth the short stop. It ranks among Negombo's most visited sights, and for good reason - most itineraries include it on day one.
What It Is
You step from bright street heat into a cool, high-ceilinged nave, with painted scenes overhead and rows of wooden pews facing an ornate altar.
Why Visit
It explains Negombo's Portuguese and Catholic heritage in one stop, a layer of history easy to miss on a beach-only visit. That puts it near the top of any Negombo visit, and it deserves the spot. Combine it with Lellama Fish Market - they are close enough to walk between and together make the strongest half-day in Negombo. Mornings are quieter if you want to take your time.
