This 104-hectare forest reserve sits behind the Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic, protecting Kandy's last remaining primary rainforest fragment. Home to 80 bird species and various mammals including barking deer and wild boar, the sanctuary offers hiking trails through dense forest canopy just minutes from Kandy's city centre. It ranks among Kandy's most visited sights, and for good reason - most itineraries include it on day one. Tickets cost LKR 230 foreigner adult, LKR 115 child and 2-3 hours for main trails is enough to see everything without rushing.
What It Is
What you experience depends on the season. Spring and summer are the strongest months, but even in winter the grounds have a quiet appeal. Dress for the weather - you are outdoors the entire time.
Why Visit
Experience primary rainforest and spot endemic bird species within walking distance of central Kandy. That puts it near the top of any Kandy visit, and it deserves the spot. Combine it with Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic and Kandy Lake - they are close enough to walk between and together make the strongest half-day in Kandy. Mornings are quieter if you want to take your time.
