This small museum preserves Sri Lankan railway history in a restored 1908 station building, displaying vintage locomotives, railway equipment, and documents from the colonial-era mountain railway construction. The outdoor collection includes a 1927 steam engine and original carriages that operated on the Colombo-Kandy line. It ranks among Kandy's most visited sights, and for good reason - most itineraries include it on day one. Tickets cost LKR 50 adult, LKR 25 child and 45 minutes - 1 hour is enough to see everything without rushing.
What It Is
You move through the exhibition spaces at your own pace. There is no set route, so spend time on what interests you and move past what does not. The scale is what catches you first - these are full-size machines, not models, and the main hall feels more like an aircraft hangar than a gallery.
Why Visit
Understand the engineering feat behind Sri Lanka's mountain railway and see authentic vintage trains. That puts it near the top of any Kandy visit, and it deserves the spot. Combine it with Ambuluwawa Tower and Kadugannawa Pass viewpoint - they are close enough to walk between and together make the strongest half-day in Kandy. Mornings are quieter if you want to take your time.
