Hikkaduwa Beach

Hikkaduwa Beach: Free, half day. Worth it?

Hikkaduwa Beach is a vibrant coastal town about 17 kilometres north of Galle, known for its coral reef, sea turtles, surfing waves, and lively beachfront scene. It offers a very different atmosphere from the quiet beaches further south - this is where backpackers and surfers converge, with restaurants and bars lining the sand.

What It Is

A long sandy beach divided informally into zones: the northern end has a coral sanctuary with calm water ideal for snorkelling and turtle spotting, while the southern end offers surf breaks. The beachfront road is lined with restaurants, surf shops, and guesthouses.

Why Visit

Hikkaduwa offers something for everyone - decent snorkelling right off the beach, beginner-friendly surf, and plenty of places to eat and drink with your feet in the sand. The sea turtles that hang around the coral sanctuary are a genuine highlight.
