Panoramic view over lush green tea plantations in Sri Lanka's hill country

Lipton's Seat

Lipton's Seat: Free, 2-3 hours. Worth it?

Lipton's Seat is a famous viewpoint at 1,970 metres elevation in Sri Lanka's tea country, near Haputale. It is named after Sir Thomas Lipton, the Scottish tea baron who reportedly sat here each morning to survey his vast Dambatenne Tea Estate. On clear days, the panorama stretches across rolling tea plantations to the southern coastline.

What It Is

A marked viewpoint at the top of a tea plantation ridge, accessible via a scenic 7km road from the Dambatenne Tea Factory. A bust of Sir Thomas Lipton marks the spot. The views encompass tea estates, jungle valleys, reservoirs, and on exceptionally clear mornings, the distant Indian Ocean.

Why Visit

This is arguably the most spectacular viewpoint in Sri Lanka's hill country. The combination of altitude, the rolling carpet of tea bushes, and the sense of history make it genuinely memorable. The walk through the working tea plantation is beautiful in itself.
