This 2nd-century Buddhist temple sits directly on the coastline, with waves crashing against its ancient foundations during high tide. The monastery contains well-preserved frescoes and stone carvings, making it one of the few temples in Sri Lanka where you can meditate to the sound of ocean waves. It sits in Arugam Bay's Pottuvil, close to the other main sights. It sits below the headline sights but earns its place on a longer visit to Arugam Bay, especially paired with nearby Arugam Bay Beach. Tickets cost Free (donations welcome) and 45 minutes to 1 hour is enough to see everything without rushing.
What It Is
The building itself is the attraction. Take time with the architectural detail rather than rushing through - the craftsmanship rewards a slow look. The Pottuvil location means you can step outside and be at other sights within minutes.
Why Visit
Experience one of Sri Lanka's most uniquely positioned temples where ancient spirituality meets the raw power of the Indian Ocean. It is not the first thing you should see in Arugam Bay, but with two or more days it fills a gap the major sights leave. It pairs naturally with Arugam Bay Beach and Elephant Rock - together they fill a solid half-day. Mornings are quieter if you want to take your time.
