Lahugala National Park is one of Sri Lanka's smallest but most rewarding national parks, located just 15 kilometers west of Arugam Bay. The park centres around an ancient reservoir (tank) called Mahawewa, which draws large herds of wild elephants, especially during the dry season. Unlike the more famous parks, Lahugala sees relatively few visitors, making for a more intimate wildlife experience.
What It Is
A 1,554-hectare national park centred on an ancient irrigation tank. The beru grass that grows around the reservoir is a favourite food of wild elephants, drawing herds of up to 150 animals during peak dry season. The park also supports deer, water buffalo, crocodiles, and over 100 bird species.
Why Visit
This is one of the easiest and most affordable ways to see wild elephants from Arugam Bay. The park is compact enough to cover in a couple of hours, and during peak season the elephant gatherings rival those of the more famous Minneriya. Combine it with Kudumbigala Monastery for a full day exploring beyond the surf.
