Ascetic monks used this site from around the 1st century BCE specifically for its isolation, and the ruins remain partly reclaimed by forest. It is at Anuradhapura's Outskirts & Countryside Resorts, close to the other main sights. It sits below the headline sights but earns its place on a longer visit to Anuradhapura.
What It Is
You hike a stone-paved forest path past collapsed hospital buildings, meditation walkways, and circular platforms, with monkeys calling overhead and almost no other visitors in sight.
Why Visit
A genuinely quiet alternative to the main Sacred City crowds, combining archaeology with an actual forest hike. It is not the first thing you should see in Anuradhapura, but with two or more days it fills a gap the major sights leave. Mornings are quieter if you want to take your time.
