Mihintale

Is Mihintale worth visiting? Honest verdict inside.

Mihintale is revered as the birthplace of Buddhism in Sri Lanka, where King Devanampiyatissa met the monk Mahinda in 247 BC, and the small site museum at its base houses sculptures, inscriptions and ceramics excavated from the surrounding monastic complex. The adjoining lower terraces hold the remains of the ancient refectory, assembly halls and almsgiving halls (Dana Sala) where monks once ate and studied, giving visitors context before climbing the hill's 1,840 stone steps. It's an essential orientation stop for understanding the religious significance of the wider Mihintale hill complex. It is at Anuradhapura's Outskirts & Countryside Resorts, close to the other main sights. It sits below the headline sights but earns its place on a longer visit to Anuradhapura.

What It Is

Visitors wander shaded, grassy terraces dotted with low stone foundations and carved pillars, pausing in a small, unassuming museum building filled with glass cases of excavated relics before facing the imposing staircase rising up the forested hillside.

Why Visit

Provides essential historical context on Sri Lanka's conversion to Buddhism before experiencing the sacred hill itself. It is not the first thing you should see in Anuradhapura, but with two or more days it fills a gap the major sights leave. Mornings are quieter if you want to take your time.
