In my early 20s, I hit up some of the best nightlife venues in Colombo. Not because I was into partying. I was, and still am, more comfortable with curling up on my bed with a good book while my cat purred away by my side. No, what led me to the best nightlife venues in Colombo were two things. Pure curiosity and a little bit of Leftover Teenage Rebellion. I mean, who hasn’t let those things rule their decision-making skills, am I right?

Besides, I had a great time, so no regrets. Plus, it sort of also gives me the street creds I need to write this article! So, go Young Me! What excellent foresight I had, even as a young adult!

Does Sri Lanka have good nightlife?

Ooh, complicated question. The answer is both yes and no. Sri Lanka is many things, but the Party Capital of South Asia it is not. But to say it doesn’t have a buzzing nightlife AT ALL is also wrong. It depends on where you look for it. Places like Anuradhapura, Polonnaruwa, Dambulla and Sigiriya are rather sedate. They have a huge cultural and historical impact. But, if you look for nightlife in these towns, you are in for a disappointment.

Beach resort towns, on the other hand, do cater to night owls. Towns like Hikkaduwa, Negombo and Arugam Bay continue to buzz long after the sun sets. But, of all the party towns in Sri Lanka, nowhere does it better than Colombo. The nightlife venues in Colombo offer excitement, relaxation and fun in a hundred different ways.

Why is nightlife in Colombo the best?

Colombo is no Vegas. While the city knows how to light up the night, it’s far tamer than many cities that are famous for their nightlife. Still, it offers more options compared to resort towns like Hikkaduwa and Arugam Bay. These resort towns almost always throw lively beach parties. But, Colombo has more variety when it comes to nightlife venues. From clubbing to gaming to concerts, you can while away the hours doing what you love!

Colombo is also far more easy-going when it comes to embracing wild nights of partying.

The Best Nightlife Venues in Colombo

There are some nights when you want to let your hair down and dance the night away at a club. Or you want to be daring and try your luck by playing a game of chance. There’s also live music spilling out the doors of bars and pubs that grab your attention. You will find some of the best venues that offer entertainment for those sleepless nights in Colombo.

Rhythm and Blues (R+B)

Rhythm and Blues (R+B) opened in the early 2000s. Since then, it’s become one of the best nightlife venues in Colombo.

The nightclub/dance club opens each day at 7pm. From then until the early hours of the next morning, the club thrums with energy and life. The pulsing beats of music invite every club goer to join the floor. But the extensive food and drinks menu is a strong inducement to grab one of the comfy seating options and replenish your energy. Address: 19/1 Daisy Villa Avenue, Duplication Road, Colombo 4

Bally's Casino

Gambling is… complicated in Sri Lanka. There ARE gaming centres around, but they tend to be low-key and unremarkable. If you want Vegas-esque glamour, Colombo is the best option for a game of chance. The city’s casinos are still discreet. But, once you are inside, they offer a layer of sophistication and elegance.

Dare to test your luck

Dare to test your luck

And Bally’s Casino has long been one of THE best casinos on the island. It is also among the best nightlife venues in Colombo. But to call it a nightlife venue is doing it a disservice. It’s open 24/7. A reputation for respectability, reliability and trust has made it a popular venue for locals and tourists. Once you are a guest at Bally’s Casino, you can enjoy various games and entertainment. The staff treats guests with warmth and friendliness. As a result, even newbies can feel safe here. Address: 34 D R Wijewardena Mawatha, Colombo 1

Loft Lounge Bar

If you are looking for nightlife in Colombo, but don’t like too much noise, one of the best venues is the Loft Lounge Bar. Classy and elegant, it’s a trendy place to grab a drink and sit in comfort. The bar is famous for its amazing collection of drinks. But, the food menu is nothing to complain about either.

Socialise with your friends after work

Socialise with your friends after work

Since the bar is on the quiet side, it’s a great place to go on a date as well. Or, you can even unwind after work and just exist. I’d say this is the perfect beginning to get your night started. You can hang out with your friends and enjoy dinner at the Loft Lounge Bar. Then, once you are ready to completely embrace the night, you can move on to a more active venue. Address: Colombo Courtyard, Alfred House Ave, Colombo 3

Park Street Mews

You want to know about nightlife venues in Colombo? Well, how about an entire STREET?

Park Street Mews has a buzzing vibe during festive holidays

That’s right, Park Street Mews, at the heart of Colombo, is a GREAT place at night. Well, to be honest, it’s pretty awesome during day time too. But once the sun goes down, the vibe changes so smoothly, you feel like it’s a different street. This is one of the best places to enjoy live music. Fusion restaurants give you an amazing selection of dishes that combine flavours perfectly. While Park Street Mews is rather mellow, it’s also very picturesque. Especially at night, when the street lights up and fairy lights twinkle at you from above. Location: Park Street Mews Union Place, Colombo 2

Pilawoos

Pilawoos is… not like the other venues I list in this article. To call it posh or sophisticated is laughable. It’s not. It comes very close to being a petti kade (Sri Lankan version of a corner shop. They typically sell short eats and small groceries). What sets Pilawoos apart from a petti kade is its food. While the… restaurant is easy to miss, the long line of vehicles parked at the curb in the early hours of the morning is not. Pilawoos is the pit stop of the night owls who party the night away.

The setting may not be glamorous, but the food is to die for

The setting may not be glamorous, but the food is to die for

Pilawoos serves street food and humble fare like kottu. But they taste superb. Thanks to their hours, Pilawoos is a favourite venue in Colombo. Plus, their food is so good that the restaurant is now one of the best nightlife venues in Colombo as well. Too drunk and craving some greasy food? Too tired from dancing and want something to boost your energy? Want to eat something before you catch a few hours of sleep? No problem, go to Pilawoos. Address: 417 Colombo – Galle Main Rd, Colombo 3

In On the Green

In On the Green is the British-pub styled bar of Galle Face Hotel. It even hosts a pub quiz, for the competitive among you!

Revel in the friendly atmosphere at In On the Green

It’s a unique venue with a relaxed atmosphere. But it can also feel somewhat cramped when it’s crowded. However, thanks to the excellent food and drink options and the friendly vibe, no one seems to mind the little issues. Since it draws inspiration from British pubs, the interior is fairly simple. The wooden furniture is largely responsible for setting the tone. The staff combines Sri Lankan hospitality with the pub culture to create a pretty cool setting. Address: 2 Galle Rd, Colombo 3
