Unawatuna Beach is a popular crescent-shaped bay about 5 kilometres southeast of Galle Fort. The sheltered bay with its calm, turquoise water makes it one of the best swimming beaches on Sri Lanka's southern coast. The beach is backed by palm trees and a strip of restaurants, bars, and guesthouses.
What It Is
A sheltered bay with a gently curving beach about 500 metres long. The reef at the mouth of the bay keeps the water calm, making it ideal for swimming. The western end is more developed with restaurants and sun loungers, while the eastern end is quieter.
Why Visit
If you want to swim in the Galle area, this is the beach to visit. The water is warm, calm, and a beautiful turquoise colour. After exploring the fort, this is the perfect place to cool off.
