This 104-hectare forest reserve sits on a hill behind the Temple of the Sacred Tooth, offering nature trails through dense woodland within walking distance of the city centre. The sanctuary protects native flora and fauna including purple-faced langurs, giant squirrels, and over 80 bird species. Three marked trails of varying difficulty lead to viewpoints overlooking Kandy. It ranks among Kandy's most visited sights, and for good reason - most itineraries include it on day one. Tickets cost LKR 60 adult, LKR 30 child and 1-3 hours is enough to see everything without rushing.
What It Is
What you experience depends on the season. Spring and summer are the strongest months, but even in winter the grounds have a quiet appeal. Dress for the weather - you are outdoors the entire time.
Why Visit
Escape city crowds in a protected forest reserve with wildlife spotting opportunities. That puts it near the top of any Kandy visit, and it deserves the spot. Combine it with Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic and Kandy View Point - they are close enough to walk between and together make the strongest half-day in Kandy. Mornings are quieter if you want to take your time.
