The Old Gate is the original entrance to Galle Fort, dating to the Dutch colonial period. Built in 1669, it features the carved coat of arms of the VOC (Dutch East India Company) above the archway. While most visitors now enter through the main gate, the Old Gate remains a well-preserved piece of colonial history.
What It Is
A stone archway entrance with thick walls, originally the only land access point to the fortified city. The VOC emblem and the date 1669 are carved into the stonework above the arch.
Why Visit
It is a brief but worthwhile stop that connects you to Galle Fort's Dutch colonial past. The carved VOC emblem is one of the most tangible reminders of the era.
