Ancient Buddhist monastery complex built into granite rock formations 15 kilometers inland from Arugam Bay. Dating from the 2nd century BCE, the site contains cave temples, meditation cells carved into rock faces, and a large dagoba. The monastery is still active with resident monks maintaining the ancient traditions. It ranks among Arugam Bay's most visited sights, and for good reason - most itineraries include it on day one. Tickets cost Donation requested (Rs. 500-1,000 suggested) and 2-3 hours is enough to see everything without rushing.
What It Is
The building itself is the attraction. Take time with the architectural detail rather than rushing through - the craftsmanship rewards a slow look. The Kudumbigala location means you can step outside and be at other sights within minutes.
Why Visit
One of Sri Lanka's most distinctive ancient monasteries in a striking natural setting. That puts it near the top of any Arugam Bay visit, and it deserves the spot. Combine it with Elephant Rock and Gal Oya National Park - they are close enough to walk between and together make the strongest half-day in Arugam Bay. Mornings are quieter if you want to take your time.
